Samir Hallab: Lion in Lebanon... bunny rabbit in Golan
The ruler of Syria showed up on the screens yesterday with a speech that was praising the "victory" of Hezbollah. He engaged himself in many points that he seemed lost, confused, and rather nervous. The interruption of people reciting poem's praising him was probably to ease the pressure. Al Assad showed us the Lebanese people that he was happy, content, and filled with joy to see what happened to Lebanon. He accused the founders of the "Cedar Revolution" of treason, and he mentioned that Israel came in to help the March 14th movement, and he called them the 17th of May movement, referring to the brief peace treaty signed with Israel in 1983.
The Lebanese people have a lot of question to
Mr. Assad, I will post some of the questions that comes to mind:
where was
Assad when Lebanon was being destroyed by the Israeli air force?
where was
Assad when over a thousand civilians were killed by the Israelis?
where was
Assad when over 4000 civilians were wounded by the Israelis?
where was
Assad when over a million Lebanese were displaced by the Israelis?
where was
Assad when all the bridges and roads in Lebanon were destroyed by Israel?
where was
Assad when the Israelis killed thirty Syrian workers in Baalbeck?
where was
Assad when Hezbollah's headquarters was devastated?

I'm going to leave these questions unanswered so that history the biggest judge will answer.
We all remember the testimonies of the witnesses in the Mehlis investigation report. When
Assad was meeting with martyr Hariri, when the later was informing Assad of his refusal to the extension of Lahoud's term. Assad's response was strict and to the point "If you ever think of going against us, we will destroy Lebanon on your and Jumblatt's head, and let Chirac help you then ".
After remembering these words, we can say that
Assad fulfilled what he threatened Hariri about, and we can also go further by saying that Israel fulfilled Assad's dream of seeing Lebanon destroyed.
One might ask was there a deal between
Israel and Syria, or it was just purely coincidental?
All indications show that
Israel avoided to involve Syria in this war, similarly Assad at all expenses avoided any involvement in this war too. Not one shot was fired from the Golan Heights which remains occupied since 1967.
It is well known that
Israel is trying to protect the regime in Syria. Israel objected to a change in regime as proposed by the US administration since Israel sees in the Syrian regime a safe border that has never seen any violence, and they don't want the another Hamas on the Syrian front, since any change in the regime in Syria will get rid of the Alawite regime and gets the Sunnis to rule.
So this speech by Bashar was really shameful, He is flexing his muscles as if he won, labeling people, lecturing the Lebanese people on resistance, Arabism, and nationalism.
Syria calls the situation in Golan "steadfastness" well we call it chickening out.
Now this regime is trying to defend Hezbollah as if it is its own organization. Where was the regime when Hezbollah needed help with another front to weaken the enemy? Hezbollah doesn't need the help of such a decaying, rotten, weak regime.
So
Mr. Bashar, and all the tails of Bashar in Lebanon, and all over the Arab world we would like to say, that Lebanon will live, Lebanon will survive, every time you think the Phoenix burns, It will rise again from the ashes. We will rebuild our country with the help of our friends from all around the world. Every time Bashar forgets that Lebanon is the Phoenix, we will remind him, we have done it in the past and we always do it.
Finally
Walid Jumblatt was right after all when he said "Lion in Lebanon...Bunny Rabbit in Golan"
